Ahhh, Fall is finally here. Of course it’s cliché, but Fall is my favorite season. I feel especially happy for Fall this year with how challenging 2020 has been. It just feels like we’re one tangible step closer to a new year with new potential, a new story. I love Fall for the shift in the seasons, the change in weather. And if you’re from Dallas, like us, you love it too. The oppressive heat of summer is finally over and gone. I love that it means we’re heading into my favorite holidays, full of fun family celebrations.
God gave us seasons for a reason. He is a God of seasons and rhythms. There is a purpose in every single season of the Earth, but also every single season we walk through. There is something so innately human about seasons. God knew we would need breaks and shifts in our lives. You can only run hard after something for so long before you need to rest. We need limits and time, something that God does not need. But in his mercy and infinite wisdom, he has set them up for us.
“While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night, shall not cease.” –Genesis 8:22
Fall is known as a time of harvest. You may feel tired from this year, weary. You may have spent this year sowing into so many dreams, hopes, people, growth. Personally, I have spent much of this year investing in my own mental health, my own relational boundaries with others, and spent so much time and energy working through my habitual issues and unhealthy default behaviors. I feel tired from traversing the mountain of personal growth and feel very ready for breakthrough with God.
What about you? What might God be ready to harvest from your soul? What fruit is he about to ripen?
If you have spent this year investing in something, someone, some hope, some dream, I simply want to encourage each of us to be expectant. To be watchful. To dare to hope. In a year marked by so much suffering, we still serve a mighty God, a God who sees. We serve a God who is watching for the faithful. Searching the earth for those who will choose him and worship him, those who will respond to the word he has spoken. You may feel unseen today, but I can assure you that his eye is upon you, and his hand is on your life.
Take some time over the next few days to look inwards, to ask, “God, what are you doing in me now? What are you doing in those I love? What are you doing in this world? What promise are you waiting to birth in me? What new thing are you doing?
Galatians 6:9 says, “And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.”
I am weary. You probably are too. Let’s ask the God of the harvest to move. As this season shifts, this year shifts, join me in praying for a harvest to be reaped, in my heart, in yours. In those things you have persevered in, in your children, in your marriage, in your friendship, in your career. And pray we are all strengthened so we don’t give up on doing good.
